Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a technique for treating specific mental health concerns. This practice involves working with a licensed therapist, who is trained in the method of EMDR, to move your eyes in a certain way while processing specific memories at the same time. The goal of EMDR Therapy is to help you recover from deeply distressing or traumatic life experiences.
EMDR differs from traditional talk therapy in that it focuses on changing your emotions, thinking patterns, and behaviours that are connected to the traumatic event. It utilizes what has been called an Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theory to enable the brain to “reprocess and repair” its system of storing and accessing memories.
At NKS Therapy, EMDR Therapy is conducted by clinicians who are highly skilled in utilizing this technique. Working with your therapist and under their guidance and support, you will access traumatic memories in a particular way. When combined with guided eye movements, you can heal from the mental damage of those memories, and better regulate your emotions.
EMDR Therapy at NKS is provided by Maria Slutski, MA, Psy.D, RP.
